Christian Bale to Build Village to Keep Siblings in Foster Care Together — 30 Photos
The Hollywood star is doing more than lending his name — he's leading the charge on a first-of-its-kind project in California. The goal? A bold, personal mission to reshape the foster care experience for siblings.
After nearly two decades of persistence, Christian Bale has officially broken ground on a project close to his heart — a purpose-built village in Palmdale, California, designed to keep siblings in foster care together.

Bale, best known for his Oscar-winning performances and transformative roles, stood beaming with a shovel in hand on a dusty lot 60 miles north of Los Angeles in early 2024.
Local officials and donors joined him to mark the start of construction on what will soon be a dozen homes and a community center. The project, estimated at $22 million, is expected to be completed in 2025.

What began as a personal mission in 2008, when Bale's daughter was just three years old and "The Dark Knight" was dominating the box office, has slowly evolved into a fully realized initiative.
He was moved to act after learning how frequently siblings are separated in Los Angeles County's overburdened foster care system.

"I didn't think it was going to take that long," Bale said. "I had a very naive idea about kind of getting a piece of land and then, bringing kids in and the brothers and sisters living together and sort of singing songs like the Von Trapp family in 'The Sound of Music.'"

But the reality was more complex. Determined to do it right, Bale spent time in Chicago attending child welfare meetings. There, he connected with Tim McCormick, who had experience building a similar model.

McCormick recalled Bale's commitment, even as the project faced delays and challenges, including the COVID-19 pandemic. "He said we've got to do this in California. To his credit, through all sorts of challenges, COVID and everything else, he never gave up," McCormick said.

The organization behind the project, Together California, was co-founded by Bale, McCormick, and Dr. Eric Esrailian, a UCLA physician and film producer.
With public funding secured in 2022 and architectural plans finalized in 2023, construction officially began in 2024. The goal is to welcome the first children into their new homes by 2025.

AC Martin, the architecture firm behind the village design, documented on Instagram and Facebook, has embraced the project despite its smaller scale.
CEO Tom Hsieh spoke of its significance, "I think we're at a point in our society where we have to help. And for me, you know, as exciting as creating the next high-rise, we need to give back to society and community. This is small, but I'm tremendously proud of this project."

Although the site is still under construction, Bale is already seeing his vision come to life. "I love designing. I love architecture," he said. "So I adore the whole design process. And so actually seeing it really – coming to happen is just very, very exciting."

The project still requires additional fundraising and the recruitment of suitable foster parents, but momentum is building. When complete, the village will stand as a tangible legacy of Bale's long-term commitment to child welfare.

"This is something that when, you know, I'm closing my eyes for the last time. I wanna look and say...think about, 'Did I do some good? Did I make any changes in the world that were useful?' And this will be one of the things that I'll be most proud of when I, you know, draw my last breath," the Hollywood star stated.

Christian Bale's village project is no longer a dream — it's under construction, funded, and steadily moving toward its goal. When completed, it will provide a lasting solution for foster siblings and stand as one of his most meaningful contributions off-screen.
